Travel along the legendary Hai Van Pass, explore imperial cities and sacred pagodas, and uncover wartime stories in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). You’ll ride bicycles through villages, glide in basket boats along coconut canals, and walk beneath cathedral-like stalactites. Blending culture, history, and natural beauty, this trip reveals the heart of Central Vietnam at every turn.

Why you will love this trip

  • Pedal through rice paddies and riverside villages near Hoi An, then join a family cooking class for a true taste of central cuisine.
  • Wander Hoi An’s ancient town — from the Japanese Covered Bridge to clan houses and temples
  • Journey over the misty Hai Van Pass and into Hue, where serene pagodas and royal tombs tell the story of Vietnam’s last dynasty.
  • Step inside the Imperial Citadel of Hue, a UNESCO treasure scarred by history yet filled with grandeur.
  • Follow the echoes of history in the DMZ, from the Quang Tri Citadel to the underground resilience of the Vinh Moc Tunnels.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Da Nang (-)

Xin chào and welcome to Central Vietnam! Upon landing in Da Nang, your private driver will greet you and transfer you to Hoi An — a beautifully preserved trading port where lanterns glow along the Thu Bon River. The rest of the evening is yours to relax and enjoy the gentle pace of this ancient town.

Overnight in Hoi An
Included: Private airport transfer · Hotel accommodation

Day 2 – Hoi An Life & Culture (B, L)

This morning, hop on a bicycle and ride along quiet village paths and emerald rice paddies to Kim Bong Carpentry Village, known for centuries of skilled woodworkers and traditional boat building. From there, board a boat along the Thu Bon River to Van Lang Fishing Village and the lush Bay Mau Water Coconut Forest. Here, you’ll step into a basket boat and glide through shaded canals as local rowers share stories and casting techniques — perhaps even a playful spinning trick or two!

Later, join a local family for a hands-on cooking class where you’ll prepare signature dishes such as Tam Hữu (shrimp, pork, and herbs) and Bánh Xèo (crispy pancakes). After lunch, enjoy a soothing foot soak with medicinal herbs, a traditional wellness ritual.

In the afternoon, return to the heritage core of Hoi An. Visit Quan Cong Temple, admire the ornate Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, cross the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, and explore the 200-year-old Tan Ky Ancient House. End your day browsing the lively Hoi An Market — a vibrant scene of seafood, spices, tropical fruits, and handmade crafts.

Overnight in Hoi An
Included: Guided day tour · Boat trip · Basket boat ride · Bicycles · Cooking class · Entrance fees · Meals: B, L · Hotel accommodation

Day 3 – Hoi An to Hue via Hai Van Pass (B, L)

After breakfast, depart Hoi An and journey north along Vietnam’s most scenic coastal road. Wind your way up the Hai Van Pass, where misty mountains meet the sea in sweeping views. Arrive in Hue by midday and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, begin exploring Hue’s cultural treasures. Visit the peaceful Thien Mu Pagoda, perched above the Perfume River, then continue to the elegant Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, set within pine forests and lotus ponds. Conclude your day at the striking Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh, a hillside masterpiece blending Vietnamese traditions with French influence. Its dragon mosaics, dark stone walls, and richly adorned altar make it one of Hue’s most unique royal monuments.

Overnight in Hue
Included: Private transfer · Tour guide · Entrance fees · Meals: B, L · Hotel accommodation

Day 4 – Imperial Treasures of Hue (B, )

This morning, step back in time at the Imperial Citadel, the walled city that was once the political, cultural, and spiritual heart of the Nguyen Dynasty. Enclosed within thick stone ramparts and a moat, the citadel was modeled after Beijing’s Forbidden City and served as the seat of power from 1802 to 1945.

Enter through the imposing Ngo Mon Gate, once reserved for emperors, and step into a world of lotus ponds, courtyards, and royal halls. Though scarred by wars, the Imperial Citadel still reveals the grandeur of the Nguyen Dynasty. Visit the Thai Hoa Palace, where emperors held court, and walk through the Forbidden Purple City, once a private world for the royal family. Your guide’s stories of emperors, concubines, and mandarins bring this UNESCO site vividly to life.

After lunch in the city, cycle into the countryside toward Thuy Bieu Village, shaded by pomelo orchards. Discover ancient garden houses, centuries-old communal halls, and the delicate Thanh Tra pomelo, once reserved for royalty. Continue through the villages of Nguyet Bieu and Luong Quan, where daily life flows gently among fields and gardens, before returning to the city in the late afternoon.

Overnight in Hue
Included: Private A/C vehicle · Tour guide · Entrance fees · Bicycles · Meals: B, L · Hotel accommodation

Day 5 - Hue to Quang Binh via DMZ (B, L)

Today’s drive north traces the historic Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), once the line dividing North and South Vietnam. Visit the former Khe Sanh Combat Base, explore remnants of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Dakrong Bridge, and pause at the Quang Tri Citadel, scarred yet enduring from the 1972 battles.

Continue to the Hien Luong Bridge over the Ben Hai River the symbolic 17th Parallel, painted half red and half blue to symbolize Vietnam’s former division and eventual reunification.

In the afternoon, explore the Vinh Moc Tunnels — a vast underground network dug by villagers to withstand relentless bombing. Extending nearly 30 meters deep with multiple levels, these tunnels housed entire families, complete with kitchens, wells, and even maternity rooms. Walking through the dim passageways offers a powerful glimpse of resilience and survival, where life continued beneath the earth despite the devastation above.

Continue to Phong Nha where you’ll check into your hotel near the national park’s edge. Enjoy a quiet evening surrounded by limestone mountains, preparing for tomorrow’s natural wonders.

Day 6 - Paradise Cave & Phong Nha Cave exploration (B, L)

Today is a highlight for nature lovers. Start with a visit to Paradise Cave — one of the most spectacular dry caves in Asia. Stretching over 31 kilometers beneath the limestone mountains of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, the cave reveals a surreal underworld of giant stalactites, delicate draperies, and cathedral-like chambers. Wooden walkways guide you deep into the cave’s heart, where dramatic formations tower above you like frozen waterfalls and intricate stone sculptures.

After lunch, continue your journey by boat along the tranquil Son River. As limestone cliffs rise on either side, you’ll glide into the mouth of Phong Nha Cave — a vast river cave stretching over 7 km. Glide past shimmering formations and walls carved with ancient Cham inscriptions, earning it the name “Fairy Cave.” Part of a UNESCO listed karst landscape over 400 million years old, these caves reveal nature’s artistry in stone and water.

Overnight in Phong Nha

Included: Private A/C vehicle · Tour guide · Entrance fees · Boat ride · Meals: B, L · Hotel accommodation

Your driver will then transfer you to Dong Hoi Airport for your onward flight.
