Overview

Step into the heart of Cambodia, a country shaped by ancient grandeur, devastating history, and an enduring spirit that quietly takes your breath away. This five-day journey moves between Cambodia’s two cultural capitals: Phnom Penh, where French colonial architecture lines boulevards steeped in memory, and Siem Reap, the dusty, lantern-lit gateway to the greatest temple complex on earth. From the gilded spires of the Royal Palace to the smiling stone faces of Bayon, every day reveals a new layer of a civilisation that built wonders from stone and survived the unimaginable. With a private guide, included transfers and a Vespa street-food adventure through Siem Reap’s night streets, this is Cambodia experienced at exactly the pace it deserves.

Not two explorers are the same. That’s why this itinerary is fully customizable! Just let us know — our local experts are here to shape a journey that feels entirely your own.

Why you will love this trip

  • Explore the grand Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, gleaming symbols of Cambodia’s royal heritage.
  • Visit the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng for a profound encounter with Cambodia’s recent history.
  • Watch Phnom Penh glow at sunset from a Mekong River cruise, glass of wine in hand.
  • Ride through Siem Reap’s night streets on a Vespa, sampling Khmer dishes at hidden local spots.
  • Greet sunrise over Angkor Wat, its silhouette mirrored perfectly in the lotus ponds below.
  • Wander Ta Prohm, where silk-cotton roots embrace ancient stone in a spectacle of nature’s reclaim.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Phnom Penh | Royal Splendor of the Capital (L)

Your guide and driver are waiting at Phnom Penh International Airport to welcome you with warm Cambodian hospitality and transfer you to your hotel. After a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, the city begins to reveal itself.

The afternoon takes you to the Independence Monument, the National Museum, and then the centrepiece: the Royal Palace, home to Cambodia’s royal family and seat of its centuries-old tradition. Within its grounds lies the breathtaking Silver Pagoda, named for its floor of more than 5,000 silver tiles and housing a collection of golden Buddhas that few visitors forget. The day closes atop Wat Phnom — a hilltop temple where local legends mingle with city views and the first hints of Cambodian dusk.

Included: Private airport transfer · Tour guide · Hotel accommodation

Day 2 – Phnom Penh city tour | The Story of Resilience (B, L)

This is a day that stays with you. Fifteen kilometres outside the city lies Choeung Ek — the Killing Fields — where more than 17,000 people lost their lives under the Khmer Rouge regime. It is a solemn, important place, offering space for reflection among the quiet memorials.

Back in the city, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum confronts visitors with the full weight of what happened here. Once an ordinary high school, S-21 became a place of unimaginable suffering in the 1970s. If you're fortunate, one of the few living survivors may be present to share their story of courage.

The afternoon lifts the spirit at the bustling Russian Market, where colourful stalls spill over with crafts, silks and local curiosities. As Phnom Penh's skyline turns golden, board a sunset cruise along the Mekong River — the perfect way to let the day's emotions settle over a glass of wine.

Included: Tour guide · Entrance fees · Sunset cruise · Meals: B, L · Hotel accommodation

Day 3 – Phnom Penh to Siem Reap | Journey Through the Heart of Cambodia (B, L, D)

After a relaxed breakfast, the countryside opens up as you head north toward Siem Reap. The drive is its own quiet revelation — rice paddies shimmering in the heat, palm trees marking the horizon, roadside markets flickering past the window.

En route, a stop in Skoun — affectionately known as Spiderville — introduces one of Cambodia’s most unusual local traditions: fried tarantulas, crunchy and golden, piled high on market trays. Adventurous? This is the moment to find out.

Arriving in Siem Reap in the late afternoon, check into your hotel before the night takes an unexpected turn. A vintage Vespa picks you up for the “Siem Reap After Dark” tour with Vespa Adventures — weaving through lively night markets and back-street food stalls, sampling authentic Khmer dishes and catching glimpses of local life that no restaurant menu could ever recreate.

Included: Private transfer · Meals: B, L, D · Hotel accommodation

Day 4 – Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom & Ta Prohm | Icons of the Khmer Empire (B, L)

The alarm goes off before dawn for a reason. At first light, Angkor Wat’s five towers rise from the mist and are caught perfectly in the lotus ponds below, one of those rare travel moments that photographs can only approximate. After returning to your hotel for breakfast, the full day unfolds across the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site unlike any other on earth.

Pass through the ancient South Gate into Angkor Thom, once the imperial capital of the Khmer Empire. At the heart of the city, Bayon Temple’s 216 serene stone faces gaze serenely outward in every direction — a sight that manages to feel simultaneously enormous and intimate. Continue through the Baphuon, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, each surface carved with scenes from an entire civilisation’s mythology.

After lunch, Ta Prohm offers something entirely different: a temple left largely to the jungle, where silk-cotton roots drape over gallery walls and fig trees push through ancient stone. Famously the backdrop for Tomb Raider, it is even more extraordinary in person.

The afternoon returns to Angkor Wat itself for a deeper exploration — its kilometre-long bas-reliefs, ascending galleries and soaring central tower seen now in the warm glow of the afternoon rather than the blue rush of dawn.

Included: Guided tour · Entrance fees · Meals: B, L · Hotel accommodation

Day 5 – Departure from Siem Reap (B)
The morning is yours. Perhaps a wander through a local market for one last armful of silk scarves and hand-carved trinkets, or a slow coffee at your hotel’s poolside café watching the garden wake up. When the time comes, your driver transfers you to Siem Reap International Airport for your onward flight — carrying with you a Cambodia that the photographs will remind you of, but never quite reproduce.

Included: Private airport transfer · Meals: B

FAQ

When is the best time to do this trip?
Cambodia’s dry season, from November through March, brings the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures for temple-hopping — and is the most popular time to travel. April and May run hot, often above 35°C, while the wet season from June to October cools things down with afternoon showers and lush, green landscapes around Angkor. Every month has its own character, and the trip can be tailored to suit it.

Do I need a visa for Cambodia?
Most nationalities can obtain a Cambodian e-visa online before travel, or a visa on arrival at the airport with a passport photo and the relevant fee in US dollars. Requirements vary by passport, so we recommend confirming with your nearest Cambodian embassy or our team before departure.

How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a leisurely-paced trip suited to most fitness levels. Days involve walking on uneven temple ground, some stairs and short periods in the heat, with a private vehicle and driver on hand throughout so you can rest whenever you need. The Vespa night tour and Angkor sunrise are optional and can be adjusted to your pace.

Can the itinerary be customised?
Yes — every Ginkgo Voyage trip is privately guided and built around you. Pace, hotel category, included experiences and even the route itself can be tailored to your interests, travel dates and budget. Let our local experts know what matters most to you and we’ll shape the journey around it.

What should I pack?
Lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat and sunscreen for the heat, and modest covering for shoulders and knees when visiting temples and the Royal Palace. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for uneven temple terrain, and a light rain jacket is worth packing if travelling during the wet season.

Is this trip suitable for solo travellers or families?
Both. As a private tour, it runs just for you, your family or your travel companions, with no joining a larger group. Pacing, content and hotel choices (including family-friendly stays) can all be adjusted accordingly — and the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng visits can be modified or skipped for younger travellers if preferred.

What's included in the tour price?
A private English-speaking guide and driver throughout, all airport and overland transfers, hotel accommodation, entrance fees and the meals listed each day. International flights, travel insurance, personal expenses and optional activities are not included unless stated.
