Cycling in Ninh Binh: Best Routes & Countryside Tips

Cycling in Ninh Binh: Best Routes & Countryside Tips

If you want to see the authentic heart of northern Vietnam, we highly recommend cycling in Ninh Binh. While a private car is comfortable, a bicycle lets us take the small backroads where the big vans cannot go. You get to see the rice fields up close, hear the local life, and stop whenever you see a view you like.

But not every path is the same. Some are just a quick 15-minute ride, while others take a few hours. This guide helps you pick the right route so you do not end up tired or lost in the midday heat.

Why cycling is the best way to get around

Ninh Binh, also known as ā€œHalong Bay on land,ā€ is almost completely flat, which is great news if you are not a professional cyclist. Most of the famous spots like Tam Coc, Trang An, and Hoa Lu are quite close to each other.

Instead of just moving from ā€œPoint Aā€ to ā€œPoint B,ā€ cycling makes the journey itself the highlight. You will pass through small villages and hidden valleys that most tourists miss because they stay on the main roads.

A quick look at the best routes for cycling in Ninh Binh

Here is a simple breakdown we have put together to help you plan your morning or afternoon:

Our 5 recommended Cycling Routes in Ninh Binh

The Light Starter: Tam Coc to Thai Vi Temple

This is the shortest and easiest ride available. It is perfect if you simply want to get a feel for the bike. Starting from the center of Tam Coc, we follow a quiet road through Van Lam village. Along the way, we pass local embroidery shops and traditional family homes.

The path quickly opens up into a peaceful valley where rice fields sit right at the base of the limestone cliffs. The destination is Thai Vi Temple, a quiet stone temple dedicated to the kings of the Tran Dynasty. Unlike the busy boat pier nearby, this area is usually very still, with only the sound of local farmers at work.

This route works well if you want a quick, quiet 20-minute escape through the local village without much effort.

The Scenic Classic: Tam Coc to Bich Dong Pagoda

This is the most popular route for a reason. It is short, flat, and follows the scenic corridor south of Tam Coc. As we leave the village, we pass by large pink lotus ponds (only if you visit between late May and July).

The road is paved and easy to navigate, with the limestone cliffs getting closer as we ride. The highlight is reaching the stone bridge at the entrance of Bich Dong Pagoda. From there, you can walk up through three levels of temples built directly into the mountain caves.

Our Tip: Try to get to the stone bridge before 9:00 AM. It is the best time for photos before the day-trippers arrive.

This route works well if you have 30-40 minutes and want to see the iconic Ninh Binh view on a short, scenic journey.

For Nature Lovers: Heading to Thung Nham

If you want to get away from the main tourist area and avoid the crowds, we suggest heading past the turn-off for Bich Dong Pagoda toward Thung Nham Bird Park. The road becomes narrower and much quieter as it winds through Hai Nham village.

The scenery here feels more untouched; you will likely see herds of goats roaming the hillsides and local fishermen in the wetlands. The road has a few gentle slopes as it approaches the entrance to the park, a large nature reserve known for its limestone caves and massive bird colonies.

Our Tip: If you visit around 4:30 PM, you can witness thousands of storks and herons returning to the trees for the night—it is one of the best nature sights in the region.

This route works well if you want to avoid the crowds and see more wildlife and local life.

The Full Experience: Tam Coc to Hoa Lu via Trang An

This is the most complete route for cycling in Ninh Binh. It links multiple landmarks into one journey. Starting from Tam Coc, the route follows rural roads alongside the Sao Khe River.

You will pass near Hang Mua, where you can stop if you wish to climb the 500 steps for the well-known viewpoint over the valley. Continuing toward the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, the scenery becomes more enclosed, with forested limestone valleys replacing open fields. The route ends at Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, where temple complexes reflect Vietnam’s early history as a sovereign state.

Our Tip: This is a long ride with a few turns. We suggest having a guide or a reliable map to stay on the smaller backroads and avoid the busier main highway.

This route works well if you have half a day and want to see everything, combining scenery, viewpoints, and history.

The ā€œProā€ Route: Cycling to Cuc Phuong National Park

We have to be honest: this one is a real challenge. It is a 40km journey (one way) that takes us away from the tourist hubs and deep into the rural districts of Nho Quan. The landscape shifts from the iconic karst mountains to rolling hills and eventually dense, primary jungle.

The ride follows a mix of secondary roads and local paths. Once we reach the park gates, there is a further 20km paved road that leads into the heart of the forest, completely shaded by massive ancient trees. You can visit the Endangered Primate Rescue Center near the entrance to see the incredible conservation work being done for Vietnam’s rare species.

Our Tip: If you are not up for the full 40km ride but still want to see the forest, we can arrange a private car to take you to the park entrance. You can then cycle on the quiet, shaded roads inside the forest instead, it is a much more relaxing way to see the jungle.

This route works well if you are a serious cyclist looking for a challenging day-long adventure deep in nature.

Practical Cycling Tips (Read this before you go)

We have seen many people struggle because they did not plan for the weather or the bike quality. Here is what you need to know for a smooth experience of biking in ninh binh:

  • Watch the clock: We advise avoid cycling between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The sun is very strong and there is not much shade on the rice field roads. Start early or go late.
  • Check your bike: Most hotels offer basic bikes, but quality varies. Therefore, always check the brakes and tires. At Ginkgo Voyage, we ensure our guests have high-quality, maintained equipment for every journey.
  • What to bring: Bring a hat, a bottle of water, and some sunscreen. You do not need professional cycling gear—regular comfortable clothes and a pair of sneakers are fine.
  • Stay safe: The backroads are quiet, but the main roads have motorbikes and cars. Always stay to the right and keep an eye out for people turning.
  • Itinerary: Ninh Binh boasts a multitude of scenic layers. To avoid missing both land and water views, determining [how many days in Ninh Binh] is crucial for balancing your rest and exploration time.

The Verdict: Which one should you pick?

  • If you want a quick, quiet 20-minute escape: Go to Thai Vi Temple.
  • If you have 30-40 minutes and want the iconic Ninh Binh view: Go to Bich Dong Pagoda.
  • If you want to avoid the crowds and see wildlife: Go toward Thung Nham.
  • If you have half a day and want to see everything: Do the Tam Coc to Hoa Lu via Trang An route.
  • If you are a serious cyclist looking for a challenge: Cuc Phuong is your destination.

In our experience, you do not need to be an athlete to enjoy Ninh Binh. Even a short 20-minute ride behind your hotel will show you a side of the countryside that you will not see from a car window.
